Thiruvananthapuram was a district where hockey was very popular, and the 1970s may be considered the golden era of hockey in the district due to the presence of many prominent personalities such as Sri. V P Sadananthan, Smt. Omana Kumari (Arjuna Awardee), and others. The current situation is unsatisfactory due to a lack of adequate infrastructure. Thiruvananthapuram Hockey is doing everything possible to develop and promote hockey on the outskirts of the district as well.

With immense pleasure and pride, we would like to share that Padmasree P.R. Sreejesh, the captain of the senior Indian hockey team, started Hockey from G V Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram and has won bronze in Olympics, silver and a gold medal at the Common Wealth Games. In addition, Thiruvananthapuram has produced several other female international hockey players as well as Arjuna Awardee Smt. Omana Kumari (Asiad Gold Medallist). The only sport to bring the nation Olympic, Asian, and Commonwealth medals is hockey. Thus, among other sports disciplines in the district, hockey's prominence stands out clearly and is promoted.
